Wrånes at full sail

Tori Wrånes has her most prestigious assignment yet when she represents the Nordic region in Venice. Her 15-meter-long installation is clad in sails from The Ship Sørlandet .

– The sails from Sørlandet "It's a really raw material to be able to cover the sculptures with. The people at Kilden Theatre have done a great job," says Tori Wrånes (48).

Fædrelandsvennen speaks to the Kristiansand artist by phone from Venice. There she is waiting for the installation/sculpture "Human Lace" to come through customs. It is 15 meters long, 4.8 meters high and consists partly of cast bronze.

It's awesome to collaborate with The Ship . The sails are full of time, and have been patinated in the wind. There are blood stains on them from people who have hoisted them, there are holes and tears after they have crossed the Atlantic 20 times. We have had costumes sewn for the installation of these sails. There is something special about being able to combine the local with the international like this, says Wrånes.

The collaboration with The Ship Sørlandet started when she hung upside down during the Tall Ships' Races in 2010.

- There I sang "Who can sail before the wind", she recalls.

– Tori was able to buy five sails that have been used on Sørlandet for ten years. It is absolutely fantastic that they can be reused in this way. These sails have been the driving force in what has been the best and worst school year for many young people, says Kari Dahl, operations manager at The Ship Sørlandet .

She plans to attend the opening of the Venice Biennale. Everyone from Kilden who has contributed will also be there.
