A home for learning and adventure
The school ship Sørlandet – has been a home for learning, experiences and new horizons since 1927. The Foundation The Ship Sørlandet has as its primary goal to preserve our proud maritime heritage through active use. It is with this vision that we continue to fill the sails with new life - all year round. Read more about A+ World Academy here.
In 2014, the Foundation took the initiative to start an international school program on board the ship. Our goal was to create a unique educational offering that combines traditional seamanship with solid academic teaching, inspired by values such as collaboration, responsibility and leadership.
This initiative has since grown into what we know today as A+ World Academy . The program gives young students from all over the world a unique opportunity to spend an entire school year on board. This year, which also corresponds to an exchange year in the second year of high school, becomes an educational journey and a foundation for the first years of adult life. Around half of the students are Norwegian, while the rest come from various countries around the world.

"My Five to Global Leadership"
is our framework for developing global leaders through five core areas:
- Academic development – International curriculum with AP courses, personalized teaching, and experiential learning.
- Community and life on board – Focus on cooperation, responsibility, social awareness and the needs of the community.
- Reflective learning – Students develop self-awareness, self-leadership, growth mindset, and personal maturity.
- Global Studies – Deep understanding of cultural differences, global perspective, and tolerance through travel and interaction.
- Sailing Training – Practical skills, time management, teamwork, and developing resilience and endurance.
The program combines academic quality with personal and social development in a unique international and maritime context.
