In 1938, Karl Aksel was 16 years old and worked in the galley.
On 22 August 2021, Karl Aksel Andresen visited the school ship Sørlandet again - just a month before his 99th birthday. He is a Norwegian-American and a sailor, and now he is home visiting Søgne. Jarle Andhøy has followed him for a while and used the opportunity to record one of his projects - a documentary about war sailors.
Fortunately, we made it, said the 99-year-old. He lives in Brooklyn, and the desire to visit the proud ship was great. He posed willingly for the photographers as he recounted his life on board Sørlandet and at sea. With a little help he got up the gangway . Captain Marcus Post received him and had a good conversation before he was given a tour of the main deck. The legs were not strong enough this time to go under deck. He had visited " Sørlandet "when he was 86 years old too.
The memories flowed on and Karl Aksel willingly shared them with everyone. He was only 16 years old when he first came on board. The first trip they were a day outside Flekkerøy. Then they sailed to Edinburgh and back to Arendal, Oslo, Gothenburg and Stockholm. He had never been seasick.
