Follow the renovation of the school ship Sørlandet summer 2024 - week 4
Sørlandet is at the "Bredalsholmen dokk og fartøyvernsenter" shipyard in Kristiansand and will undergo repairs to the hull, get a new main deck, overhaul the rig, and much more. The shipyard period is scheduled to last from May 20, 2024 to August 25, 2024. The new school year on board begins on August 31, 2024, by which time the ship must be ready. The project is estimated to cost between NOK 32 million and NOK 34 million, depending on whether there are any works that have not been included in the plans. The work is necessary to renew the sailing permits for five more years and be one of the main attractions during Tall Ships Races Kristiansand 2025.
Below is the weekly report for the past week. We publish the development of the project weekly as it progresses.
There is still good progress on all critical jobs.
Bredalsholmen dokk og fartøyvernsenter has removed plates G6 and G7 on the starboard side. Preparations for the removal of the remaining plates are ongoing. Currently well in line with the schedule.
UTM company Certex has carried out a UTM (ultrasound) survey of the hull. The findings are well in line with the expected condition, and the initial steel renewal program remains. Some minor suspect areas on plates E4 (port and starboard) and F11 (starboard) will be investigated.
Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter has made good progress in re-laying the fore and aft decks. Most of the main deck has been removed. The underlying steel condition is fairly good on the port side, but more corrosion is found on the starboard side. Rust removal is ongoing. Deck plates on each side of the main mast were found in poor condition and will be renewed.
Representatives from Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter are proactive, and take on other tasks for the yard as needed when possible.
A rigging expert has arrived to manage the upcoming rigging maintenance. Good progress at this point. No major discoveries, apart from what is known.
The capstan on the foredeck has been removed for maintenance. The upper part is in poor condition, but can be reused. A long-term solution should be considered.
Installation and coverage around the vessel has been somewhat completed, but there are still some leaks around the decks. Especially during heavy rain on 15.06.24. The supplier is carrying out repairs.
Sørlandet's friends have begun surface treatment and painting of chests, pinrails and other deck fittings.
A representative from Jotun has participated and reviewed upcoming paint requirements and surface treatment methods.
A new radar and lantern system has been ordered.
Many thanks to Sparebanken Sør, Agder County Council and Kristiansand Municipality for the local support that makes this possible. We would also like to thank Gard, DNV and Jotun for providing good conditions for the world's oldest fully operational full rigger.
